Select faces to delete.

Remaining geometry following the curvature of the original model.

Extrude the edges.
Bevel the edges.

Sub-D smoothed.
A tweaked one to get a sculpted edge.

Of course as you push the vertices around you may need to adjust the distance between the the main body and the additional geometry so that it maintains consistency. In the above example I added some additional geometry to create the indentations.
